Summary: This National Council of Teachers of Mathematics yearbook, organized into three parts, provides a collection of articles on the professional development of teachers of mathematics. Based on known research, part 1 examines the issues associated with professional development and addresses the stages of the continuum of professional development from general to mathematics-specific perspectives. The articles in part 2 address the initial preparation of teachers of mathematics in grades K-12. A call for changing preservice programs is followed by descriptions of exemplary mathematics teacher education programs at all levels, K-12, including a model for a preservice program to prepare elementary mathematics specialists. Part 3 focuses on professional development for practitioners. These articles describe very creative projects and programs from the educational and business communities. High levels of cooperation and collaboration among those constituencies committed to reforming mathematics education are showcased throughout.
