Summary, etc. <br/>This teacher's manual is a resource to assist teachers in expanding and refining their repertoire of teaching strategies and to guide them in instructional planning and decision making when teaching reading in the content areas. The manual does not prescribe a particular style of teaching--it is of value to teachers as they consider their curriculum objectives, the nature and needs of their students, and their personal teaching styles. The first section of the manual discusses three interactive elements of reading: what the reader brings to the situation, the learning context that defines the task, and the characteristics of the written text. The second section discusses the roles of: metacognition and reading to learn; reflective questioning; discussion; and reflective conversation. The third section presents a framework for instrucational planning. The fourth section focuses on six assumptions about learning. The fifth section presents 40 popular classroom teaching strategies that can be adapted for students from elementary through high school. Contains 97 references and 11 figures.
